Louise Mckinney Post-Secondary Scholarship Application

The Louise Mckinney scholarship program was established to honor Louis Mckinney by rewarding students in Alberta for their academic achievements and supporting them financially in their undergraduate studies.

Before diving deep into the scholarships, how to apply, requirements, etc., let’s know a little about Louise Mckinney.

Mckinney was a former member of the legislative assembly of Alberta (she was there for about four years). She was an activist and a Canadian politician from Alberta, Canada.

Before she gave up the ghost in 1931, she spoke out in favor of education, women’s property rights, stronger liquor control, etc. If you visit Calgary in Alberta today, you will surely find her statue there.

Now back to the scholarship program. Let’s look at what makes you qualified for the scholarship award.

Louise Mckinney Scholarship Requirements

• Applicant must be a citizen of Canada, a protected person, or a permanent resident.
• Applicant must be an Alberta resident, and to be considered an Alberta resident, one of the following conditions must apply:
  • One parent or legal guardian has maintained permanent residence in Canada for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies and be residing in Alberta, or
  • Alberta is the last place the student has lived for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies, or
  • the student’s spouse/partner has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for 12 consecutive months prior to the person attending post-secondary.
• You must not be in a graduate program or an apprentice.
• You are expected to be in good academic standing as determined by your institution.
• You must be enrolled full-time in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate or professional program at Alberta’s publicly funded post-secondary institution.
• Students nominated for the Jason Lang scholarship in the same year are not eligible for this scholarship.
• You must have completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous fall/spring semesters.
• You must submit your completed application form and documents, like your school transcript, before the specified deadline.
• Alberta Student Number (ASN) and Social Insurance Number (SIN) are mandatory.

What GPA do you need for the Mckinney Scholarship?

A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is required.

Some institutions may set their required GPA above or below this, but this doesn’t equate to you getting the scholarship. All they need to know is how good you are in academics and if you are eligible for the scholarship.

How to apply for the Louise Mckinney Scholarship

1. The application process is very simple. Make sure you are eligible for the scholarship.
2. Contact the Student Awards Office in your institution concerning the Louise Mckinney post-secondary scholarship.
3. If it’s available in your institution, you will be told how to apply or given the application form.
4. Fill out the form with the required information.
5. Submit the application form to the post-secondary institution’s Student Awards Office.

Kindly note that the number of scholarships available varies, it may be only 10 or 40 positions available in your institution, which makes it even more competitive. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Student Awards Office.
